A murder inquiry into the police death of a civilian amid civil unrest last month has been launched by a Bangladeshi court against former premier Sheikh Hasina and six other senior officials.
After demonstrators swarmed Dhaka’s streets a week ago, Hasina, 76, abruptly ended her tight-lipped reign by leaving by chopper to nearby India.
Attorney Mamun Mia, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of a private individual, said, “A case has been filed against Sheikh Hasina and six others.”
As per Bangladeshi legislation, the first stage of a criminal inquiry is called “the murder case against the accused persons,” and he said that the Dhaka Metropolitan Court has directed police to accept it.
Alongside Obaidul Quader, the general secretary of Hasina’s Awami League party, Mia also nominated Asaduzzaman Khan, Hasina’s previous home minister.
Additionally, it listed four high-ranking police personnel, including former police inspector general Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who were appointed by Hasina’s administration but have since left their positions.
Executive Director of the Detective Branch Harun-or-Rashid and top Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials Habibur Rahman and Biplob Kumar Sarker were also identified.
