NEWS: Sanders on Netanyahu Addressing Congress This Week

July 22, Washington, D.C.—Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced today the following ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the Congress at a joint session this week:

As previously said, I will not be attending Wednesday’s address by Benjamin Netanyahu to Congress.

Like the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the UN independent panel, I too believe that Benjamin Netanyahu and Yahya Sinwar are war criminals.

To initiate this confrontation, Hamas staged a horrific attack on Israel under the leadership of Sinwar, murdering 1,200 innocent men, women, and children and kidnapping over 240 more.

Netanyahu and his extreme right-wing government have attacked the Palestinian people with such ferocity that at least 39,000 have died and 89,000 have been injured, with women, children, and elderly citizens making up 60% of the injured.

Furthermore, Gaza is no longer livable due to the destruction of the region’s housing stock, physical infrastructure, and healthcare system by the Netanyahu war machine. All educational institutions have been assaulted, and 88% of all school buildings have incurred damage.

In addition, the ongoing restrictions on humanitarian supplies have left around 495,000 people experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity, which translates to starvation.

No, the US Congress should not provide a cordial welcome to Netanyahu. On the other hand, his rejection of a two-state solution and his acts in Gaza and the West Bank deserve our harshest condemnation. In my opinion, the government should stop providing funds to his extreme right-wing administration so that it may continue to brutally devastate Gaza.
