As a young Black woman, daughter, mother, and friend, Sonya Massey was and should be cherished. Sonya called the police because she was concerned about a potential invader.
Regardless of identity or location, all Americans need to be able to request help without fear of losing their lives.
It’s important to remember that Black Americans, more than most of us, often worry about their safety. Sonya was killed by a responding officer.
Justice is due to Sonya’s family. I am very sorry for her children and her whole family, as they are going through an unbelievable and horrible catastrophe.

I commend the office of the State’s Attorney in Springfield for their timely action. While we await the investigation of the situation, let’s pray for comfort to the grieving.
